Did you ever hear about how R. Crumb used to send an assistant out to draw telephone poles and overhead wires? Crumb said something like (I hope I have this right): "We are completely surrounded by these structures and wires everyday, but none of us could draw them from memory if we tried. So I have to send a specialist out to capture the damn things on paper."

i've been obsessed with telephone wires for a while. when i was a child, i used to follow them for hours around my neighbourhood, inventing encounters between the people who lived in the surrounding houses.
